The Most Important Opinion When it Comes to Personal Style? Yours.

Updated: Nov 11, 2022

Let me explain what I mean by that. Have you ever been out shopping and trying things on and the salesperson tells you how incredible something looks on you but when you look in the mirror you don’t see what they see? That’s what I am talking about here. Now, there are a couple of layers to this idea that I’d like to peel back when it comes to your personal style.

What you’re seeing when you look in the mirror:

Now, there is a chance that the salesperson sees something that you just can’t see in yourself. They may be completely spot on about how amazing you look in the the pieces you’ve tried on and there is a disconnect between what you see and reality. I think this is probably the number one problem I see when I work with women who aren’t used to feeling like they can look good in their clothes. We’ve been trained to think that beauty and style come in a specific size and shape. This is untrue. And when you find the right pieces, I’ll share how you can be sure about them here in a bit, you really can start to look in the mirror and see something positive. Also, there is a time and place for your comfort zone being pushed. It can often be the case that you don’t like what you see simply because you are used to what you’re seeing. If the items make you physically uncomfortable, they have to go. If they make you mentally uncomfortable, it’s worth questioning why before you say no.

So, the real question is, how can you tell if you need to change your mindset around how you view yourself, or you need to change the items of clothing to actually flatter your body so you can embrace what you’re seeing in the mirror? Here are my tips for being able to differentiate between the two:

  1. Take a picture of yourself BEFORE you try any new items on

  2. Snap pictures of yourself in the new items/outfits

  3. LOOK at the pictures of yourself. Which ones do you like better? I often find that the picture is easier for me to look at and decide if I actually like it. If you have a way to put the new pictures side by side with the one in your outfit you own, that can be really telling

  4. Send the pictures to a trusted friend or family member to share their perspective

  5. Take the items home that you at least like and try them on there. Sometimes being at home gives you a better perspective in a lower pressure environment

  6. If this all sounds like too much work, you can always hire me ;) Just sayin! PS, I am very honest about what I see and I’ll never encourage you to purchase items that don’t feel right.

Chic of the Week:

Here’s the key with this outfit idea, you’ve got to pay close attention to the fit of the shorts. If you are short waisted, go for a mid to low rise short. If you have a long torso, a high waist is the better option for you. You also want to pay attention to length. The taller you are the longer inseam you can wear. Old Navy has tons of options for cuts and length on their denim shorts. If you nail the shorts, the rest is gravy! So you can rock the tank sweater and the flats and you are ready to go!
